The Story:
The Bible As One Continuing Story of God and His People

by Mac Lucado & Randy Frazee

The Story tells the grandest, most compelling story of all time!

God goes to great lengths to rescue lost and hurting people. That is what The Story is all about: the story of the Bible, God’s great love affair with humanity. Condensed into 31 accessible chapters, The Story sweeps you into the unfolding progression of Bible characters and events from Genesis to Revelation. Like any good story, The Story is filled with intrigue, drama, conflict, romance, and redemption—and this story’s true!

The Bible’s final chapters unveil the full victory of Christ. Evil is judged, Satan is defeated, and God dwells with His people forever in a New Heaven and New Earth. The pain of the Lower Story gives way to the glory of the Upper Story fulfilled. The King returns, the curse is broken, and eternity begins—with joy that never ends.

Passages: Revelation 1–5; 19–22

Main Idea: The story ends where it began—only better.

Lesson 20: The End – Revelation

I. Introduction to Revelation

  • John’s Vision on Patmos – exile becomes encounter (Revelation 1:1–20)
  • Jesus Revealed in Glory – not the lamb in a manger, but the King of kings

II. Jesus and the Churches (Revelation 2–3)

  • Letters to seven churches: commendation, correction, call to overcome
  • Christ walks among His churches and calls them to faithful witness

III. Worship in Heaven (Revelation 4–5)

  • Throne Room Vision – worship of the Creator
  • The Lamb Who Was Slain – worthy to open the scroll

IV. The Return of the King (Revelation 19)

  • Heaven Opens – Jesus rides in, Faithful and True
  • The Marriage Supper of the Lamb
  • Antichrist and False Prophet Defeated – thrown into the lake of fire

V. The Millennium (Revelation 20:1–6)

  • Satan Bound for 1,000 Years
  • Believers Reign with Christ – a time of peace, joy, and justice
  • Four Purposes of the Millennium:
    1. Reward the saints
    2. Fulfill the prophets
    3. Answer the Lord’s Prayer (“Thy kingdom come”)
    4. Expose human rebellion apart from grace

VI. Final Judgment (Revelation 20:7–15)

  • Satan’s Final Rebellion – ends in eternal defeat
  • Great White Throne Judgment – death and Hades thrown into the lake of fire
  • Only those in the Book of Life enter eternity with God

VII. New Heaven and New Earth (Revelation 21–22)

  • The Old Order Passes Away – no more death, tears, or pain
  • The New Jerusalem – radiant, vast, holy
  • God Dwells With His People – “Behold, I am making all things new”
  • River of Life and Tree of Life Return – Eden restored, forever secure

Theological Reflections

Five Profiles of the Millennium:

  1. Peace
  2. Prosperity
  3. Purity
  4. Prolonged Life
  5. Personal Joy

Three Key Topics in Revelation’s Climax:

  • The Millennial Kingdom – Christ’s righteous rule
  • The New Heaven and Earth – a purified creation
  • The New Jerusalem – eternal home for God’s redeemed

Key Themes & Takeaways

  • History is not cyclical—it’s linear, moving toward a glorious conclusion.
  • God keeps every promise. The Upper Story wins.
  • Jesus is coming soon—not in weakness, but in power.
  • Our future is not cloudy or vague—it’s a redeemed creation with Christ at the center.
  • The best is not behind us—it’s ahead. Live with readiness and hope.
