The Pilgrim’s Progress

Introduction
Every true pilgrim must walk through the Valley. In Stage Four of The Pilgrim’s Progress, Christian endures two of the most harrowing episodes on his journey—his battle with the monstrous Apollyon in the Valley of Humiliation, and his terrifying trek through the Valley of the Shadow of Death.
In the Valley of Humiliation, Christian meets Satan’s fierce commander, Apollyon. The conflict is brutal and bloody. Christian is wounded, nearly defeated, and yet—by grace—he fights back with the sword of the Spirit. Victory comes not through strength, but through faith, perseverance, and prayer. But the danger isn’t over.
As Christian presses on into the next valley, he’s overwhelmed by darkness, confusion, demonic voices, and terrifying lies. The Word offers no comfort—so he turns to “All-Prayer.” When he nearly falters, the Lord sustains him. When the night seems endless, the light of dawn breaks through. And on the other side of suffering, he sings.
This is not merely Bunyan’s story—it’s ours. For every follower of Christ will, at some point, be called to stand firm, resist the Devil, and walk through dark valleys with nothing but faith, prayer, and the presence of the Shepherd.
“Though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for You are with me.” — Psalm 23:4
Episode Outline: The Fourth Stage
Title: “Warfare and Shadows: Two Valleys Every Pilgrim Must Cross”
PART 1: Christian Enters into Battle with Apollyon (Valley of Humiliation)
A. The Enemy Appears
- Apollyon (Rev. 9:11) is grotesque and terrifying.
- Christian considers fleeing—but remembers he has no armor on his back.
- Application: There is no retreat in spiritual warfare (Eph. 6:10–18).
B. The Dialogue Before the Duel
- Apollyon tries to woo Christian back with promises and accusations.
- Christian confesses his sins but clings to his new allegiance to the King of Zion.
- Satan accuses; Christ defends (1 John 2:1; Rev. 12:10).
C. The Fierce Combat
- Apollyon launches fiery darts; Christian defends with shield and sword.
- He is wounded in head, hand, and foot—his thoughts, actions, and walk.
- At the lowest moment, Christian grasps the sword again and cries: “Rejoice not over me, my enemy! When I fall, I shall rise” (Mic. 7:8).
- Apollyon flees (James 4:7); Christian gives thanks and is refreshed with bread, wine, and leaves from the Tree of Life (Rev. 22:2).
PART 2: Christian Confronts the Valley of the Shadow of Death
A. The Terrain and the Terror
- A deep ditch on one side, a bottomless quagmire on the other.
- The path is narrow, the darkness thick, the sounds terrifying.
- Christian walks carefully with sword drawn and faith trembling.
B. Demonic Harassment
- He is assaulted by blasphemous suggestions he mistakes as his own thoughts.
- The Word seems distant, so he turns to “All-Prayer” (Eph. 6:18).
- Application: When Scripture feels dry, cry out to God.
C. The Turning Point
- He hears another pilgrim ahead quoting Psalm 23.
- Encouraged that he’s not alone, he presses forward in hope.
D. The Breaking Dawn
- Light reveals the dangers he passed and those still ahead.
- More traps, snares, and pitfalls—but now he sees clearly.
- He emerges from the Valley with a song of praise.
