Systematic Theology: An Introduction to Biblical Doctrine

by Wayne Grudem

Chapter 7 — The Necessity of Scripture: Do we need the Bible? Yes—but not for every kind of knowledge. The doctrine of necessity teaches that Scripture is necessary for knowing the gospel, maintaining spiritual life, and discerning God’s will—but that some knowledge of God comes through general revelation (creation, conscience, and providence). This chapter also explains why special revelation is vital for salvation, why general revelation is insufficient for eternal life, and why missions and evangelism remain urgent.
