The Pilgrim’s Progress

Introduction
Theme: False Confidence, True Conversion, and the Peril of Presumption
The Ninth Stage of The Pilgrim’s Progress is a sobering exploration of deceptive paths and spiritual self-deception. Christian and Hopeful’s journey takes a darker turn as they confront counterfeit faith in several forms—Ignorance, Little-faith, the Flatterer, and even Atheist. Each represents a danger that still lures modern pilgrims: misplaced confidence, intellectual rebellion, the absence of perseverance, and the quiet creep of spiritual apathy.
But in this shadowed portion of the path, Hopeful’s testimony shines as a reminder that true salvation is not found in feeling or heritage, but in the finished work of Christ alone. The stage ends with a stark wake-up call: not all who walk near the way belong to it.
John Bunyan’s imagery is piercing and prophetic here—sounding an alarm to examine the nature of our faith. Are we truly resting in grace, or merely playing the part of the religious? The Ninth Stage warns us not to sleep through our spiritual journey. It calls us to alertness, humility, and hope that endures—even across the Enchanted Ground.
