April 5, 2020 • Chris Reighley • Matthew 26:6–13, Mark 14:3–9, John 12:2–8, John 12:9–11, John 11:55—12:1
Jesus begins His final week with quiet purpose—welcomed in devotion, yet shadowed by the rising hostility that will soon erupt.
Introduction: Six days before the Passover, Jesus enters Bethany. This scene is filled with irony: while Mary anoints Him in love, the chief priests plot against Him and Lazarus. This day sets the emotional and spiritual tone for the week.
Outline:
- Arrival at Bethany – John 12:1–2
- Mary Anoints Jesus – Matt. 26:6–13; John 12:3–8
- Religious Leaders’ Plot – John 12:9–11
- Devotion vs. Deception – Contrasting Mary and Judas
- Prophetic Fulfillment – Preparation for burial (Isaiah 53:9)
Setup for Next Lesson: Monday brings the King’s arrival in Jerusalem. Palms will wave, but not all will welcome Him as Lord.
